Three-year-old A was brought to me with an unusual complaint. She was born slightly premature but with what is called a ‘Vestibular Anus’. To explain simply, the rectal canal was not formed properly and the child cannot excrete naturally. This defect was surgically corrected when she was yet a tiny tot of  five months. Everyone thought that the problem was solved, but it really began then. The stool was always hard and she could not expel it. She was kept on Cremafin regularly. Not much use. Very often after a complete compaction of about a week an enema used to be given to relieve temporarily. Even then, the child had to strain, almost getting red in the face, resulting in severe exhaustion. This went on till the child was 3 years old.

When she was brought to me, I noticed that the child was not in any painful or  disturbed   condition in spite of not having an evacuation for four or five days. Also she was overactive and was constantly babbling loudly. I told the mother not to resort to enemas often and to observe the symptoms. She informed me that the child would keep on straining, passes very hard stool and that also slips back sometimes. I gave Plumbum Met and later Silica, based on the symptoms described. There was no cognizable change.

Then I knew that there was some problem in observation of the symptoms.  Many a times people, due to unfamiliarity with the system of homeopathy. do not describe the suffering properly, delaying the cure. As homoeopathic prescription depends on the subjective suffering of the patient, identification  and classification of symptoms is of great significance.

On further questioning, the mother informed  that the child would go quite frequently to the toilet, but with  negative results. The child was feeling the pressure continuously. With this key  symptom, a few doses of Nux Vomica made a lot of difference for few days, but it did not last. Then I chose Strychninum 30, baseed on the mental conditions as well as the severe constipated bowel. That finally  did the trick. In just three days, the child started evacuating normally and the perturbed parent is all praise for homoeopathy.
