G.S
is a young man of thirty-six. He has gone through virtual hell, partly
of his own making, for past seven years. He used to drink and smoke
heavily and wakeup all night, presumably for doing his on-line
computer based business. He developed intense pains in the stomach,
near the region of the pancreas. He used to call from Hyderabad and
complain of severe bloating of the stomach and abdominal region, which
he used to refer as ‘gassiness’. Sometimes, even the chest used to
feel oppressed causing gasping for breath. He also developed very
painful corns under both the feet. He used to slice them off with a
blade. Minor surgery was done a few times to remove the corns, but
they would reappear in a short while.
He was
causing untold misery to his parents. He used to get into violent fits
of temper. The parents tearfully told me that he would break some
things like furniture items, beat and abuse both of them on a few
occasions. They suspected that he was under the influence of narcotics
in addition to alcohol and smoking. He had no friends and would keep
himself indoors. Whenever he had the gastralgic pain, he would have
severe vomiting and retching. The only recourse adopted was to sedate
him in the hospital to queiten his misery due to the pains. At that
stage I was requested to undertake his treatment. His constant
complaint of tumefaction of the stomach did not really give any
indication of the real constitutional picture for the homoeopath.
It was masked with the influence of his uneven habits,
medicines he used to swallow constantly for immediate relief and the
injections he was rushing to take for abating the misery. He used to
over eat and suffer.
The painful callosities (corns), the mental condition of being
headstrong, haughty when sick, being fearful of breaking down under
stress and little things unduly annoying him were the guiding group of
symptoms which led me to choose Lycopodium 10M. This medicine also
covers the derangement of the liver and pancreas,
particularly due to the abuse of liquor.
In
about three months, his tantrums toned down and became less frequent.
His corns stopped tormenting him. The suffering due to stomach derangement also reduced. I
followed up with a couple of doses of Nitric Acid 1M to supplement and
cover the sycotic miasm. The condition improved much more. The corns
stopped growing fast as earlier and wee not causing any pain. Since
things looked up, people around him were feeling better. He was never regular f responsibly reporting his condition. A
year went by with his occasional calls whenever he over-ate and
complained of the resulting bloating of the stomach. But he still had
to rush for the injection for immediate relief.
I went
to Hyderabad to get first hand observation. I really saw something
peculiar. He would sit down without his shirt and somebody would have
to press and rub his back and sides with a downward motion. He would
be making loud sounds as if burping and that would only give him
relief of the bloating and pain. They were not genuine eructation but
showed a variety of cramps. He also told me that he was off smoking
and liquor completely for over six months. Yet he could not help his
gluttony when he felt easier and hungry. The cycle of cramps
(gastralgic), and injections for relief would repeat. I prescribed
Strychninum for the conditions prevailing at the time. It helped for a
while but did not hold.
