CANCER
is the disease, which scares one and all. In spite of the billions of
dollars spent on research on this subject, the results have not been
reassuring. Cancer therapy mainly consists of three broad
approaches-chemo, radiative and replacement (of the bone marrow.)
Essentially, Cancer is the unregulated division of the cells. Why that
happens is yet speculative and subject to professional opinions, which
keep changing. For the homeopath, cancer is another symptom, whether
it results in a tumor, ulcer or any other pathological change. The
feeling of the patient, the subjective totality is the real guideline
for the treatment.
Since
all cancer cases have the commonality of the loss of regulation at the
very depth and root of the organism, the vital force, which regulates
the life mechanism, gets disturbed radically. Because of this
commonality, a background medicine is needed. That is the cancer
nosode, Carcinosin. I consider this as an extension of the miasmatic
concept of the homeopathic philosophy. Let it be clear that Carcinosin
has been used for many other conditions depending on the provings and
the symptom totality of many a patient. A constitutional medicine is
identified based on the symptomatology to strengthen the vital force
apart from dealing with day to day changes. I will illustrate the
above with a case that I recently treated.
A
couple of years ago, N.M approached me for treatment of cancer of
the oesophgus. He was seventy-eight at that time. Oesophagus is
the tube through which food etc passes from the mouth to the stomach.
We may call it the gullet. If this portion of the body gets
dysfunctional, it is a serious threat. Any normal intake of food or
drink becomes impossible. Such patients are fed through tubes for
sheer survival. Thirty
percent of the gullet of N.M was cancerous and he could not even
swallow any food, even softly mashed Khichdi. Horticulture was his profession. He suffered with
breathlessness, which aggravated whenever he spent some time working
in the garden. Earlier, he had suffered from ‘bronchial asthma’
for quite some time. He also had a cardiac infarction an year before
he approached me and had been taking several drugs since then. For N.M,
thick mucus would accumulate in his chest and nostrils and he had to
exert quite a bit for dislodging it. He also had to exert a lot for
passing his stools, which invariably used to be hard. Because of the
cancerous growth in the gullet, he developed a hoarse voice.
The
worst of it is that he had a dozen sessions of gamma irradiation. I
usually would not take up a case treated with radiation. The
irradiation alters the metabolism and the case becomes incurable
generally. I would like
to state here categorically that all persons, in principle, are
curable according to homoeopathy. But continuous palliation and
suppression with drugging and the radiation exposure for therapy
induces incurability.
The
information given by N.M did not help in deciding the remedy. The
symptoms were too mixed up. It was very difficult to judge which part
of the symptom group is genuine and which is the induced result of
various forms of drugging. The homoeopath always faces this stone wall
when he undertakes such cases. However, on careful observation, I
noticed that the corners of his mouth were ulcerated. Yet he did not
feel any pain or discomfort due to this ulceration. That indication
was the real breakthrough to start off with Condurango 30 twice a day
with Carcinosin 1M every week. It does not mean that Carcinosin is
needed in all cancer cases. The provings and sufficient clinical
experience is available to choose this remedy as a constitutional,
when indicated.
Two
months later, the ulcers at the corners of the mouth disappeared which
was the first step on the right track. His condition then was- a feeling of a plug in the pharynx and
he could only swallow liquids comfortably. I switched to Baryta Carb
6, to be taken twice a day. This was the medicine suited for the total
symptom picture of the patient at that time. The provings of Baryta
Carb have clearly shown its marked action on the muscle coats of the
heart and its vessels and covered the earlier background of his chest
troubles. I had to observe his progress carefully. He started feeling
better and more energetic within a month and without any other
complication. He could then swallow soft food without much difficulty.
Four months later he started coughing and was expelling
considerable amounts of yellow phlegm. Pulsatilla 200 relieved him of
this also in a few days. Carcinosin was continued fortnightly. In the
Handbook of Healing of Swamis Narayani and Ananda, they have
emphatically recorded the exemplary effects of supplementing the
treatment of cancer cases at the physiological level also. Their great
clinical observations prompted me to follow the guidelines. Cancer
mixture no 1, containing Conium, Hydrastis and Phytolacca in mother
tinctures as well as the Potassium supplement with Kali Phos, Kali Mur
and Kali Sulph in the 6X potency were given three times a day. The
progress was steady and reassuring. He kept on feeling better and
better. He was able to resume some of his working schedule in the
garden. All the other medicines he had been taking were withdrawn
gradually.
In
October 2001 I sent him to the Tata Hospital for checkup of the cancer
condition. They declared that no abnormal mucosal irregularity was
seen and that the hypopharynx
was normal. This was again confirmed in June 2002. He continues to
live normally and happily. Luck was on his side since he was refused
surgery earlier in consideration of his age and depleted condition.
That made him seek help in homoeopathy. He was sincere and wise to
follow the prescribed path with homoeopathy.
